3rd Anniversary Seminar

As the finale of the 25th Anniversary Celebration, HKCAAVQ hosted a third thematic Seminar on the topic of Student Engagement on 31 May 2016 (Tue) at the Auditorium of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups Building. The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Hamish Coates, Chair of Higher Education at the Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Melbourne, which was followed by a Panel Discussion with representatives from programme operators and local academics, including Dr Lawrence Chan, Deputy Executive Director of the Vocational Training Council (VTC); Dr Tom Fong, Associate Vice-President (Student Development and Campus Services) of Hang Seng Management College (HSMC); and Professor Paul Kwok, Secretary to Council of The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK).

Drawing on 15 years of experience in working with hundreds of institutions, Professor Coates shared his insights in assessing and enhancing student engagement for the improvement of the quality of higher education, and also the implications of student engagement for pedagogy and institutional policy. His presentation clarified the concept, took stock of current practice, looked at key findings from research, advanced suggestions for institutional personnel and policymakers, and clarified challenges and difficulties in implementing student engagement initiatives.

The seminar was well attended by close to 110 participants, including local Council Members, senior members of UGC-funded institutions, representatives from programme operators, as well as professional staff of HKCAAVQ. It is also part of the forum series supported by the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) under the Education Bureau to share good QA practices among local institutions.
