HKCAAVQ Forum Series : Meeting the Challenges with Quality Assurance, Quality Enhancement and Excellence - From Contingencies to Norms

21 Oct 2020

As the first of the Series, HKCAAVQ hosted the Forum themed ‘Meeting the Challenges with Quality Assurance, Quality Enhancement and Excellence – From Contingencies to Norms’ on 21 October 2020.

In the opening remarks, Mr Albert Chow, Executive Director of HKCAAVQ, shared a range of considerations in planning and implementing online teaching and learning delivery and concluded with some observations on good practices.

Three distinguished speakers were invited to share about their insights and experience into the initial action plans and strategies taken at the institutional and programme levels in mitigating the COVID-19 challenges, especially in the middle of 2019/2020 academic year and towards the commencement of 2020/2021 academic year.  The speakers and their topics were –

  • Professor Lilian Vrijmoed Kwan

(Vice-President (Academic), UOW College Hong Kong)

Topic: Opportunities to embrace inclusive and engaging learning amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic

  • Professor Allan Yuen

(President, Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education)

Topic: Reimagining Early Childhood Teacher Education Amidst COVID-19 Challenges

  • Dr Kim Mak, BBS, JP

(President, Caritas Institute of Higher Education)

Topic: From Coping to Reflections: Experience During COVID-19

During the Q&A session, the audience, primarily representatives from the accredited institutions, was enthusiastic about learning more on the practical issues encountered, mitigating measures taken, and effects on the student learning experience, as well as what the speakers would consider effective or worth further experimenting. In the Q&A session, the majority of audience agreed in principle with a QA agency’s perspective that use of technology is a means to an end.  Online teaching and learning needs to be considered in the holistic design of the curriculum and pedagogies, programme and module intended learning outcomes, as well as assessment.
